Genetics, nutrition, data and integrated farming in Australian Wagyu production

As part of the Australian Wagyu Association’s WagyuEdge ’26 tour, 4Sight had the opportunity to visit Arubial Wagyu and Lillyvale Feedlot in Queensland.

For 4Sight, it was a particularly relevant operation to see first-hand.

Arubial brings together a Fullblood Wagyu breeding program, farming and feed production, and the 26,000 SCU Lillyvale Feedlot within an integrated agricultural operation.

It provides an interesting example of how genetics, nutrition, feed production, animal performance and data can come together within a commercial Wagyu production system.

Building the Arubial Wagyu herd

The Morgan family's involvement in farming and grazing extends back generations, but its journey into Fullblood Wagyu began after attending the Annual Wagyu Conference in 2015.

Today, Arubial reports a herd of around 4,000 Fullblood Wagyu cattle across five properties in South East Queensland.

Its breeding program incorporates artificial insemination, embryo transfer and IVF, supported by performance information including BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values.

Arubial identifies a range of traits within its breeding decisions, including milk, carcass weight and marbling, along with gestation length, birth weight and marble fineness.

It is a level of attention to genetics that reflects the long production cycle and value associated with Fullblood Wagyu.

Nutrition from an early age

Nutrition is also an important part of Arubial's approach.

Arubial states that calves are maintained on a rising plane of nutrition from birth, including access to specially developed calf-grower rations.

The broader farming operation contributes to that nutritional system, with dryland farming producing silage for Wagyu breeders as well as commodities used by Lillyvale Feedlot.

At Lillyvale, the scale increases considerably.

The feedlot is located in Queensland's Western Darling Downs, within a major grain and fodder-growing region. Arubial's farming operations produce approximately 30,000 tonnes of silage annually, while the feedlot's milling and feeding infrastructure handles around 400 tonnes of ration.

For 4Sight, seeing this connection between feed production, nutrition and livestock performance was particularly relevant.

Measuring feed efficiency

One of the particularly interesting aspects of the Lillyvale operation is its emphasis on measurement.

Arubial uses GrowSafe pens to monitor individual animal feed intake and growth, providing information that can be used to assess Net Feed Efficiency.

According to Arubial, this information enables the business to identify animals that consume less feed while achieving comparable weight gain, with the resulting data contributing to breeding decisions.

Arubial has also been an early adopter of the MIJ camera for collecting carcass data, with this information contributing to BREEDPLAN figures.

For 4Sight, this emphasis on measurement was one of the valuable aspects of seeing the operation.

High-value livestock production increasingly provides opportunities to connect information about genetics, nutrition, feed intake, growth and final carcass performance rather than considering each independently.

Closing the agricultural loop

Lillyvale's approach to manure management was another area of particular interest.

Arubial reports that more than 40,000 tonnes of manure from feedlot pens is recycled into cropping and grassland areas.

The business identifies improvements in soil tilth, fertility, soil structure and water retention among the benefits associated with returning this material to its farming system.

From a 4Sight perspective, this is an interesting practical example of agricultural resource utilisation.

Feed and fodder are produced to support livestock. Livestock generate nutrient-rich organic material. That material can then be returned to agricultural soils and contribute to future crop and pasture production.

It demonstrates why looking at an agricultural business as an interconnected biological system can reveal opportunities that aren't as obvious when individual components are considered separately.

Seeing integrated Wagyu production first-hand

One of the benefits of industry tours is the opportunity to move beyond individual technologies or production statistics and see how an entire agricultural system operates.

At Arubial and Lillyvale, genetics, feed production, nutrition, measurement, livestock management and farming all form parts of that larger system.

For 4Sight, visiting operations such as this provides valuable perspective as we continue to deepen our involvement with Australian Wagyu producers.

Understanding how progressive producers are approaching animal performance, nutrition, resource utilisation and production efficiency helps us better understand both the challenges facing the sector and where future opportunities may exist.

The visit to Arubial Wagyu and Lillyvale was an excellent opportunity to see those principles being applied at commercial scale.
